People and organisations. As a psychologist this relationship has long intrigued me and I’ve spent my working life understanding more about this complex and highly impactful bond and shared my learnings with others.
I fundamentally believe that work can create a wonderful opportunity for people to grow and learn, and that organisations can make a significantly positive impact on the world.
Academic and thought leader
As a Professor of Management Practice at London Business School, I designed the ‘Human Resource Strategy in Transforming Companies’ programme and have since led it for over 20 years. It is considered one of the world’s leading programmes on people and organisations. I also teach my idea about people and organisations to the MBA students in one of the school’s most popular electives, ‘The Future of Work.’
I founded the advisory practice HSM Advisory and since 2008 I’ve led the Future of Work by HSM which has brought together executives from more than 100 companies to imagine the future.
Writer and speaker
With my interest in people and organisations, I’ve developed and described my point of view in a series of books, articles and speeches. My ten books cover the link between business and HR strategy (Living Strategy), the new ways of working (The Democratic Enterprise), the rise of complex collaboration (Hot Spots and Glow), the socially responsible roles of corporations (The Key) and the impact of a changing world on employment and work (The Shift, The 100-Year Life and The New Long Life).
In 2012 The Shift received the business book of the year award in Japan and has been translated into more than 15 languages. In 2015 The Key won the CMI Management Book of the Year. In 2016 The 100-Year Life was short listed for the FT Business Book of the Year award and became one of the best-selling books in Japan.
I’m a regular columnist for MIT Sloan Management Review and have written for a range of press including the Financial Times, The Times and Harvard Business Review.
Global recognition
My work has been acknowledged globally. I’ve received the Tata prize in India and was named as the annual Fellow of NAHR and received the CCL prize in the US. I have also been awarded the AHRI prize in Australia and the Best Teacher Award at London Business School. I’m proud to have been ranked by Thinkers 50 as among the top management thinkers globally for several years running.
Positions of influence
As a Fellow of the World Economic Forum, I’ve chaired the WEF Council of Leadership and have recently been made co-chair the WEF Global Future Council on Work, Wages and Job Creation. I’ve served on former Japanese Prime Minister Abe’s “Council for designing the 100-year-life society” and am currently a member of the international advisory board of Equinor.
